Good designs cannot live beyond time and function in most cases; because for a design to be good, they need to satisfy one important condition and that is being timely; good designs shall match the current market style and shall respond to the desires of current clients as effected by the current fashions, great design on the other hand is different; great design defines its own category and/or different enough to be except from fashions and trends; great design is timeless in this sense, furthermore when you have a good design product you would normally discard or recycle it if the product no longer fulfil its primary function or if there exists new products that fulfil the primary function better such as being more efficient, cost effective and similar. Great design is so good that it has an aesthetical beauty to it, it does not become obsolete, it becomes an antique; great design is already a superior form of functional art, and thus when it no longer functions, it stays as art; with these two aspects combined, great design lives beyond time and function.
