Sad but true, if you wish to design freely, you need to work for yourself as a designer. If you work for others you will always be a asked to follow others' ideas and ideals, you will not be able to truly put forward your creativity. Of course you might argue that one needs experience, so true, but this is not about it, this is about living a life, for examples 40 years as a designer, and still trimming others' work.
