There is no other profession that benefits from being multidisciplinary than the design profession which I believe indeed requires being multidisciplinary to be actually make sense. A designer without engineering background is not a good designer; a designer without an arts perspective is not a good designer; a designer that does not understand manufacturing or business is not a good designer; a designer that does not know many things in many fields of science is not a good designer; a good designer must know a lot of things in a lot of fields; because in the end it is the responsibility of the designer to connect the dots and make the connections to come up with products that make sense in all aspects; good design must make sense economically, must be appealing aesthetically and should function and endure safely; and for such to happen, a good designer must be an economist, a businessman, an engineer, an artist and everything else the job requires.
