In order to design something really good, you need to know a lot about everything; for example, let's consider industrial design; you need not only think about form and function but also market needs, transportation, logistics, ecological considerations, profits and economics of production, supply, demand, material science, ergonomics, emotional qualities, packaging, graphics communication, distribution, marketing... this list goes on and on; you must be truly invested in knowing everything you could about the product, to make it a good product, and for yourself to be a good designer.
