Onur Cobanliexplains:
Designers are highly motivated with changing the status quo; especially if the status quo is less than desirable. When a designer is disappointed and unhappy with a product, service or experience they immediately have a jolt of ideas and changes in mind that could be implemented to improve them. Bad design motivates good design. Perhaps the best way to motivate a designer is to show some terrible designs, designers suffer and cringe when they see bad design, that could be used as some sort of energy to come up with good designs!.
