Onur Cobanli explains:
The distinction between art and design comes from the fact that design has to be very functional. Design is created for a very specific initial purpose; most generally as a respond to a problem, as a solution to an issue, as a remedy to a situation, and almost always to serve a function. In art, imperfections are cherished; because each imperfection is a uniqueness in itself; and usually, the more unique the art, the more value it has. On the other hand, design must be standardised, imperfections are not welcome for those imperfections could kill and hurt people; it could be the sharp edge of a table that you hit your head, it could be a badly designed electrical suppliance that shocks you, it could be a knife that cuts you; it is the role of the designer to think how their creations would hurt people; so that the designers could come up with ideas to prevent them; for example a sleeve for a knife, rounded edge tables, and better engineered electronics. There is no space for imperfection in design for it is dangerous, design should always aim for perfection, especially when it comes to risk assessment and risk reduction, every single designer must think how they can make their designs safer and more friendly.
