Jesvin Yeo e whakamārama ana: When I say “Design becomes timeless when it bridges tradition with tomorrow,” I am describing how I see design as an act of continuity rather than novelty alone because good design carries meaning across time, it does not exist only to look new, nor does it exist to preserve the past unchanged. In fact, it connects what already exists with what is yet to come. For me, tradition is a source of insight, not imitation, it contains cultural memory, values, and ways of making that have been shaped through lived experience. When I look to tradition in my design thinking, I am not trying to recreate historical forms exactly as they were, I am trying to understand their intent, why certain materials were chosen, why symbols mattered, and how design once served people within a specific social and cultural context. That understanding becomes the foundation for meaningful design decisions. At the same time, I recognise that design must belong to its present moment. People interact with design differently today, shaped by new technologies, changing behaviours, and evolving expectations. If a design only looks backwards, it risks losing relevance, so bridging tradition with tomorrow means translating cultural knowledge into forms that feel natural and accessible to contemporary audiences, without stripping away their depth or identity.Timelessness emerges from this balance, as a design lasts not because it avoids change, but because it adapts while retaining meaning. When tradition is thoughtfully reinterpreted rather than copied, it gains new life. The past becomes active rather than archival, and the future becomes grounded rather than rootless. In design practice, this way of thinking guides how I approach materials, form, and narrative. I ask how historical references can inform modern design systems, how craft values can coexist with new production methods, and how cultural stories can be communicated through contemporary visual language. The goal of my making is not contrast for its own sake, but coherence, allowing old and new to support each other. Ultimately, this quote reflects my belief that design has cultural responsibility. By bridging tradition with tomorrow, I aim to create work that respects where it comes from while remaining open to where it is going. That continuity, between memory and progress, is what allows design to endure.
