We understand those because of the experiences we had, and we subconsciously understand their meaning, even though there is no written text to tell us what to do.But here's the thing: we gotta know our audience and the context. What's important to them? What is the visual language in their culture? Changing slightly the context, or the country can completely change the entire meaning our design.
