Great design should appeal to both your mind and your heart, and it should also come from both your mind and your hearth. Great design should embed reasoning, science, rationale, sense, wisdom and experience as well as good aesthetics. For me, the emotional aspect for most great designs is not coming from the looks but from the intrinsic beauty; when I know that the designers had though of even the finest details, that are not necessarily visible, it gives me great joy and emotional pleasure; I love well thought products, they make me happy. You may have good design with purely logic, but for great design you will need to pour in some emotion.
